A Huge Truckload of Flooring Goes to Operation Tiny Home

This is the kind of thing  we love to do, and if we could it would be all we did: help organizations like Operation Tiny Home.

We have been chatting with the folks at Operation Tiny Home for a while. We know how important the houses they build are to the veterans who receive them. And we really wanted to be a part.

Operation Tiny Home is a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit that assists people struggling with severe housing instability to maintain a life of dignity through custom high-quality tiny housing solutions and empowerment training programs. The folks at Operation Tiny Home especially have a heart for military veterans. As a group, veterans are 50% more likely to become homeless than other Americans due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing. About 1.5 Million veterans are considered at-risk of homelessness. A question you may ask is, “Doesn’t the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) take care of veterans?” Yes, they do. But the problem of homelessness among veterans is a big one. The 92,000 veterans the VA served in 2009, for instance, was only about 20% of the number of veterans in need. Operation Tiny Home began to try and close that gap.

Now, Allwood doesn’t build houses, but we do have a lot of excellent wood flooring. Often we have overstock or out-of-style items (like thousand of feet) that we can’t sell, but is perfect for donating to causes like Operation Tiny home. So, donate we did…a LOT of flooring.

Just this afternoon, Shawn Richardson from Operation Tiny Home dropped by Allwood with a 40 foot flatbed trailer, and left with it loaded full of our flooring. Our Scott Petersen was there to help load.
