Upcoming Announcement: Wind & Oar Boat School Partnership
Allwood strongly supports organizations that are focused on helping people. Sometimes that may mean housing the homeless, or feeding the hungry, or finding ways to help local farmers. At other times it is providing opportunities to learn and grow and teaching skills to those who may not have the chance otherwise. Combine that with one of our other great passions—real wood—and you instantly have our attention. That’s why we are particularly excited about this new partnership.
Wind & Oar Boat School is a youth development organization that engages young people and inspires learning through the art, science, and craft of building wooden boats. They envision a place of learning, where the aesthetic of craftsmanship gives rise to the skills necessary for success in school and in community. Wind & Oar partners with public schools and youth serving organizations to deliver STEAM programming to underserved Portland area youth in grades 5-12. Starting with their first youth program in 2012 serving 12 students at Self Enhancement Inc., Wind & Oar has grown to serving 450 youth in 2018.
Building wooden boats is an innovative and unique platform for developing an array of academic, practical, and social skills. “It’s bigger than the boat!” Wind & Oar’s hands-on, minds-on, project-based programs offer an integrated curriculum linking math, science, and design skills. Students develop critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity, and gain the confidence to pursue their goals
